Mizzie Modifies: DIY Fashion – Bling Ring

First of all I have a quick question for all my loyal and lovely Mizzie Modifies readers…..Do I use the word “bling” too much?  I know it’s an out dated, silly slang word but I just love it.  I am asking you as my friends to please let me know if it is just not cool for me to use the word bling and if you say “Yes Mizzie it is so not cool for you to use that word” as much as I love it, I will refrain from using it in further modifies posts.  Thank you  sincerely. ; )

Now for the good stuff. This Modifies is very exciting.  It is cheap, easy and it literally took me like 15 minutes!

For the past couple of months I have been really into these Kenneth Jay Lane rings, aren’t they gorgeous?
So of course I started looking around my jewelry box to see what kind of statement ring I could fashion out what I already owned. Here is what I came up with.

Step One: Find a ring you don’t wear or one that fits nicely and you don’t mind covering up.

Step Two: Find or buy a brooch that is no bigger than 2 inches in diameter and has a semi flat back to it.  Metal works the best but you could use a plastic one.  I had this one just sitting in my jewelry box and I don’t think I have ever worn it.
Step Three:  I can’t believe how easy this is.  Just glue the broach to the ring. Blam!  I used an epoxy specifically for metals and used the pin to help secure it.   If you are not sure what type of glue to use just do a little Google research.  There is so much glue info out there it’s actually shocking.

Step Four:  Wear your new fantastic statement ring.  I LOVE mine and can’t believe it didn’t cost me a dime to make.  I wore it to a dinner party the other night and received a very nice compliment on it.   I always hesitate a moment before telling people that I made it, but then I just blurt it out because I get so excited to talk about it and how easy it was to make.
So good luck, I hope it all goes well.  And please send me photos of your homemade bling rings to mizzie [at] stellashops.com.  I would love to see your creations, and I am working on a readers modifies post, so if you want to be involved you must send me photos!
Happy Modifying,

Mizzie Modifies: DIY Fashion – Cropped Jacket

This is one of my favorite modifies and so super duper easy
Step One:  Find a jacket in your closet, your local charity shop, ebay –  you get the idea.  I recommend looking for one made of a nice fabric wool blend or linen and that has an interesting pattern and nice buttons.

Step Two: Measure the length you want your cropped jacket.  I used a jacket I already owned that I like the way it fit and used that as guide.

Step Three: Cut your jacket.  Now this part I admit is a little scary but be brave, be bold and be careful. Make sure you cut in a nice clean straight line.

Step Five: Feel free to leave the edges raw or if you are feeling ambitious go ahead and hem the bottom and the sleeves.  I just folded up the sleeves for a casual look and left the bottom edge raw.

Dress: Vivienne Westwood, Shirt: Nolita NYC, Shoes: Kurt Geiger

Step Six: This is my favorite step.  Find something fantastic to wear your new jacket with, I have actually worn mine three days in a row.  Seriously,  it goes with everything!

Mizzie Modifies Bonus

The buttons that came on the jacket are really cool metal military style buttons and I hated to see them just sit in a tin in my closet.  I remembered I had been looking for buttons about the same size for a jacket I recently purchased while on tour in Manchester and decided to see if these buttons would work.

As luck would have it the buttons from my new jacket fit perfectly on the jacket that needed new buttons.  I love when things work out like that!  Makes me feel very green.

There you go, two modifies out of one.  Bargain!

Happy modifying,

Mizzie Modifies: DIY Fashion – Studded Shoes Part II

I had so much fun bedazzling my suede cork platform shoes that I can’t stop!!!  My shoe closet is starting to look like a Cher concert. To make my obsession with adhering studs on my shoes easier I purchased a Hot Fix applicator and have been applying studs and rhinestones to jazz up some of my less than fantastic footwear. This tool is amazing!  I suggest you all run out and get one ASAP.  I promise you will not regret it.

These shoes are a lovely shape, nice and chunky, but lacked pizazz.  Now I feel like they will make any outfit pop!
These were just some boring old black suede wedges before.  Now they sparkle and to quote a friend of mine “They look more expensive.”  I can’t wait for Spring!
Tell me what you think about these shoes.  Would you add studs and rhinestones to your shoes?  If you do send me a photo.

Happy modifying.

Mizzie Modifies: DIY Fashion – The Ill-Fitting Dress

This dress has never been worn.  I didn’t like it because it was to wide in the waist, too short in the skirt, and I didn’t know what to wear with it.
To fix the problem of the ill-fitting dress I just put some darts in the back of the dress and took out the hem to make it a couple of inches longer.
Then I set aside some time to try it with some pieces from my closet with the goal that I would not buy anything new to go with it.
Here is the finished product?
What do you think?

Now I know some of you have done some modifying of your own. DON’T be shy. Send me the photos I would love to post them!

Mizzie Modifies: DIY Fashion – Studded Shoes

This season is full of studs.  Not the kind you see coming out of the sea wearing the modern Speedo, muscles glistening in the sun…… Oh sorry got a little side tracked..No, I mean the metal studs we are seeing stuck all over beautiful, make me want to wear heels everyday shoes.  Studs are making a comeback so get out those jeans you bedazzled for that N’Sync concert and recycle those studs by adding them to your favorite plain heel or bootie.
Step One: Choose shoes and make sure they are clean, free of dirt and oils. These are the shoes I chose to stud.  They are Apepazza from Posh. P.S. They are super comfy for a pair of heels.
Step Two:  Get you some metal studs.  I used these from Michael’s. Because of the cork platform on my shoe, I was able to push these bad boys in there, but if your sole is solid then try looking for Hot Fix nailhead, pearls, or rhinestuds.  These come in different colors and sizes so be creative.

Step Three:  Place studs on shoes.  On the leather I just folded the pins to hold the studs secure.  On the cork platform I put a small amount of super glue on each stud then pressed them into the cork using the back of a spoon.

Step Four:  Wear your fabulous new studded shoes and just wait for the compliments.  You won’t have to wait long. I was hearing “I really like your shoes, especially the studs” literally within an hour of wearing them out of my house.

Tip: I recommend walking around the house in them for a bit to make sure your studs are secure.

As always please send me photos of modify projects you have done.  I would love to post them.

Mizzie Modifies: DIY Fashion – Oversized Business Blouse, Nip/Tuck

Once upon a time when I was forced to remodel my house by a pesky little pipe that burst in an upstairs bathroom I had a small mental break down.  In the middle of that break down I had the brilliant idea that I would be become a vintage clothes sellar on ebay.  I marched myself down to the local thrift store, picked out a few vintagy things and I even took photos of my self styled in the newly purchased old items.  Before I could upload them on ebay my mental break down passed and I got wrapped up in finishing my house and realized it  was not my destiny to run the next wickedly cool ebay vintage store.  Those poor rescued items sat in a shopping bag in my closet for about 2 years and now I am modifying one of them to justify purchasing them and bring some closure to the never realized ebay store dream.
Today’s modify is the nip and tuck of an oversized rayon 80′s business blouse.

Step One: I used a blouse I found at a thrift store for this one, but you could use something you already own that you don’t like the shape of or have inherited but it’s too big.

Step Two: You need a body form or another person to help you tuck and pin the garment where you want it smaller.  I pinned this one using a body form.  Another option is to take the blouse to your local seamstress and explain to her what you would like done.
Step Three:  Sew the pleats.  I used a sewing machine.  I don’t recommend hand stitching as it would take awhile and who has that kind of time? Right?

Step Four: Pair your new shirt with some Vivienne Westwoodesque trousers, or the real deal if you have them.  These are some trousers I bought at the same thrift store and then tapered the leg.
Pink Blouse: Thrift store, Gold Necklace: Closet Case Vintage, Plaid Pants: Thrift Store. Gold Heels: Nine West
Happy modifying!  And please send me photos of your finished projects. I would love to see your handy work.
