Get to Know: Designer Spotlight – Tidwell & Perryman

Get to Know: Designer Spotlight – Tidwell & Perryman

One of our favorite new Nashville design teams is Kevin Perryman and Luke Tidwell of Tidwell & Perryman.   Their take on vintage apparel with a modern twist has the cool factor cornered.   The line is mostly menswear, but check out the cropped plaid shirts currently residing at their shop inside Local Honey.  For those of us who endured years of Catholic schooling, don’t be scared.  It’s okay to embrace plaid again when it looks as rad as this.

We recently caught up with Kevin Perryman to learn more about one-half of this stellar design duo.

Your First Fashion Memory: I was on campus at Belmont University and had only known Luke for a week.  He busted out of the dorm in some bright yellow rubber pants and I was like, “yo, that dude has mad style.”  I learned later that is was Luke’s soccer initiation week and his teammates made him wear those pants.

Your Style in Five Words or Less: Military preppy punk mixed together.

You Couldn’t Live Without: Facebook

Inspirations: Michael Gordon, founder of Bumble & Bumble, Luke Tidwell, kids’ conversations on the subway, homeless people’s style, Yo MTV raps, honesty, my best friend Hunter, the colors red white and blue, the Cosby Show, the East Village NYC and this blog:  http://jjjjound.com

Favorite Designers: Scott Sternberg’s Band of Outsiders and Duckie Brown

Favorite Hangouts: “Recognize” on Tuesday nights at MAI (best party in Nashville), Tribe, Hunter’s apartment, outside of a Lady Gaga concert in any city, Virago’s secret spot and my bedroom.

Type of shoe or boot that best defines you: Combat boots. Every day is a battle.  I’m so deep.

Thanks Kevin!  You can find Tidwell & Perryman at Local Honey on Belmont and at Diamond Star Halo Vintage inside Fanny’s House of Music in East Nashville.

Get To Know Nashville: Rachel & Katie Dodson of Love and Flak

Get To Know Nashville: Rachel & Katie Dodson of Love and Flak

We recently did a Fashion Friday – How to Wear It post with The Lookbook on Love and Flak’s Bullet Necklace.  These necklaces ooze cool and you just can’t help but think about the history behind them.  Honestly, they’re badass and a great gift to give or receive this holiday (hint hint).  Rachel & Katie Dodson are the fab women behind Love and Flak.  They took some time out from working on their new line to answer a few questions for us for this month’s Get to Know.

Your style in five words or less: Defiant, Vintage, Romantic, Militant, Bam!

You can never have too many: Books. Reading is escapism. Escape to revisit pleasant experiences and places; Escape to find solace and affirmation; Escape in order to explore new worlds and ways of being. Books can spark creativity and give an interesting perspective to the way we approach our work and life. It’s a vacation from the regular rattle and hum of the brain.
You couldn’t live without: Hands down: COFFEE

The Moment Love and Flak was born: It’s unbelievable what people lose. Our good friend – an avid relic hunter – let us rummage through some of his rare vintage finds. Through the use of a metal detector, he has unearthed a variety of historical artifacts such as bullets, coins, medals, tags and other unimaginable Civil War era relics. We were immediately drawn to the stories behind each piece – a Civil War Saddle Shield, a World War II bullet, even a 19th century pocket watch. Inspired by the variety of colors, patterns, textures, and shapes, we began transforming our favorites in to unreproducible necklaces.
Best Holiday Memory: This year, we pooled our Christmas money and splurged on a Mediterranean cruise; just the two of us. We hit Greece, Israel, Egypt and Italy on a 15-day jaunt. We had an unforgettable trip exploring ancient Athens, the Great Pyramids of Cairo, the religious epicenter Jerusalem and the ‘Eternal City’ Rome. We felt like two girls on an ah-mazing race around the world.  It was a very Merry Christmas, two months early.
Favorite Designers: Marc Jacobs, Nicholas K, Jason Wu, Charlotte Ronson, Lanvin – designer: Alber Elbaz, YSL – designer: Stefano Pilati

Favorite Hangouts: Coffee: Frothy Monkey; Food: Urban Flatts – Turkey Pear and Brie – To die; Fashion: Gas Lamp – Hate to even spread the word about this amaze little secret; Music: 12th and Porter

Top Three Desert Island CDs: This is a toughy. Prob would change if you asked us next week….however, this week we pick: 3. The Dead Weather – Horehound, 2. The Beatles – Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, 1. Red Hot Chili Peppers – Californication

Inspirations: Alison Mosshart (do you know how hard this girl rocks?), Faith, Humor, Black and White photography, Rock and Punk culture, Ancient history, Each other, Street Fashion, Rad Music, Traveling

Love & Flak Philosophy: “There are no rules….Anything Goes”

Badass, right?  In Nashville, you can find the Love and Flak collection at H. Audrey in the Hill Center and Muse Boutique on West End.  If you’re out of state and would like more information, email us and we’ll put you in touch with Rachel and Katie.

Get to Know Nashville: Lindsay Chapman of Giador

This month, Mizzie and I featured uber-cool accessories boutique, Sleeveless as our Spotlight Store.  What you may not know is Sleeveless shares their space with an estate and custom jewelry broker service, Giador.  Lindsay Chapman is the owner of Giador.  She’s absolutely lovely and can help you find that stunning piece of jewelry that is unique to you.  She was naturally the perfect fit for this month’s Get to Know.

Your Style in Five Words or Less:  Exactly who I am TODAY!!!

You Can Never Have Too Many:  Killer BOOOOOOTS!

Your Most Amazing Estate Jewelry Find:  Honestly, the most amazing finds are those that were made for the exact client I am helping.  The perfect vintage ring in the budget of a sweet client that thought their budget would only allow for a ring that would fall flat.  It happens like magic and it’s the most exciting feeling in the world!  I actually had a hand in giving them the dream ring.  It makes my job a very rewarding hobby!

The Piece of Jewelry that Started It All:  A 1970′s free form 18kt gold ring set with a rough cut Columbian emerald……it was me and birthed excitement in providing “personality pieces”!

The Best Advice You Can Give Someone Getting Ready to Make a Jewelry Investment:  Think through what is important to you…..and remember that a piece of jewelry is merely the representation of the sentiment behind it.  Buy with a considerate and thoughtful heart.  Buy for a person not to simply buy.

Your Dream Jewelry Piece:  I don’t personally dream of jewelry…but I do dream of the perfect piece for my clients.  The relationship is what I love and, of course, the pride in giving more than is asked for a better price and with better quality.  It allows me to lay my head down and dream…not worry or feel uneasy.

You Couldn’t Live Without:  My faith.  It’s how my business was born and the backbone of everything I do.

Inspirations:  Smart and ethical business owners, Vintage jewelry, successful friends, old people….they remind me that they did it, they made it through it all, and I will too.

Favorite Escape:  A good run or a cup of coffee.
Thanks Lindsay!

You can see a sampling of the jewelry that Lindsay has available at the Sleeveless/Giador showroom in Edgehill Village.

You already know that Monkee’s is the best shoe store in Nashville.  You voted them number one in this year’s Nashville Scene Best of Nashville Reader’s Poll.  But do you know the lovely lady behind Monkee’s?  This month’s Get to Know features owner, Elizabeth Broyhill.  It’s easy to see the warm and friendly vibe at Monkee’s definitely comes from Elizabeth’s sunny personality.
